OTTAWA – Canada’s top diplomat says the Liberals may not approve of a deal to sell military equipment to Saudi Arabia, but they will allow the contract to stand.

Appearing before the Senate yesterday, Stephane Dion pointed out the Liberals didn’t approve the sale of 15-billion dollars worth of light armoured vehicles to the Saudis.

The foreign affairs minister says the government refuses to cancel the contract, which was negotiated by the Conservatives.

He says doing so would have weakened the credibility of the Canadian government when it signs other contracts.

The government has faced repeated calls to cancel the deal, due to Saudi Arabia’s abysmal human rights record.

Opponents cited the country’s imprisonment of blogger Raif Badawi and its treatment of women.
