March 16, 2016
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne ratified Resolution 2015/2016-#345 on March 15, 2016 to initiate the development of an Akwesasne Legislative Enactment Law. The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne recognizes there is a need to create an Akwesasne Law governing legislative development.
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and Akwesasne Justice Department strives to provide a comprehensive Justice System for the people of Akwesasne that is equitable, fair, balances individual and collective rights, and is respectful of culture and heritage as Mohawks. The Akwesasne Legislative Enactment Regulation was established to ensure an open, transparent and accountable law development and ratification procedure for the Mohawks of Akwesasne. This is accomplished by establishing rules of law enactment, standards for legislative drafting, enactment/voting regulations and the establishment of a public law registry system.
The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne has established a working task group to develop an Akwesasne Legislative Enactment Law to provide the framework for a community-based and principle-centered law development process. This working task group is comprised of the following technicians: Akwesasne Justice Department Director, Justice Coordinator, Justice Portfolio representatives, and the Grand Chief or designate.
