On December 1, 2015, the Community Legal Assistance Sarnia (CLAS) awarded Donna Day, the justice team leader for Enodmaagejig (Place of Helpers) Social Services on Walpole Island, its Community Service Award. CLAS bestows this award annually to recognize individuals who have gone beyond the call of duty to help its clients achieve social justice.

Donna is the central intake worker, justice team leader and member of the trauma response team for the Walpole court and the rest of the justice team. “I talk to our clients and refer them to the help they need,” she says. “In addition to referrals and support in court, we provide traditional healer services and sweat lodges for community members.”

She is also the Naaknigewnan restorative justice coordinator, assisting the satellite provincial court held on Walpole Island the first Thursday of every month, helping individuals, she says, “through the diversion program, with restorative justice circles or the new direction program.”

In addition, Donna advocates for island residents by referring them to CLAS and to the Baamsedaa (Let’s Walk Together) Aboriginal outreach program delivered to the communities of Aamjiwnaang, Kettle and Stony Point, and Bkejwanong Territory. Plus, she coordinates Temgad Nbob—their soup kitchen.

On top of these achievements, Donna, an Anishnaabe woman from Bkejwanong Territory (Walpole Island First Nation), has proudly served as the first female Chief of Walpole Island.

Congratulations, Donna!
