A traditional territory acknowledgement will be read at the start of future council meetings.

Council 6-1 Monday adopted the recommended acknowledgement, proposed by the city’s United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) committee, which consulted local First Nations elders starting in 2019 to come up with the wording.

“I believe that that process was as significant, if not moreso than many of the other organizations and governing bodies who surround us who’ve implemented traditional territory acknowledgements,” said Coun. Brian White, who sits on the committee.

The acknowledgement reads:

In the spirit of peace and friendship, we honour the Anishinaabek of the Three Fires Confederacy, on whose traditional territory we are gathered.
