OTTAWA _ Federal environment commissioner Julie Gelfand says Canada’s federal and provincial auditors general are combining forces to come up with the first comprehensive national audit of greenhouse gas emissions.

Gelfand tells a Senate committee the assessment will be completed in 2017 and the auditors hope to repeat the process every three or four years after that.

Part of the difficulty of accurately assessing national carbon emissions is the differing methodology and policy frameworks used by each jurisdiction.

Gelfand says all the country’s auditors general are working out common methodology and each provincial and territorial audit office will table its own emissions report.

The federal commissioner of the environment and sustainable development, which is part of the federal auditor general’s office, will compile a comprehensive national overview of all the reports.

Gelfand say it’s the first time, on any issue, that federal and provincial auditors have combined forces to compile a single, common national audit.
