New filmmakers strive to bring positive Indigenous representation to our screens
The role of Indigenous peoples in film and documentary-making has transformed remarkably over the past century: before, representation in Hollywood and Western films generally was limited to reductive tropes or inaccuracies and stereotypes about their histories and cultures.
Today, Indigenous filmmakers and documentarians — and their allies — have made strides in bringing accurate, positive and often illuminating stories of Indigenous people to our screens, big or small.
With Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation coming up Friday, Sept. 30, now’s a great time to check out some of the best movies and documentaries that show their multilayered lives, fiction and nonfiction.
