A bill meant to address the problems died when the election was called. The legislation to replace it in the next Parliament needs to be better.

In 2016, Colten Boushie, a 22-year-old man from Cree Red Pheasant First Nation, was shot and killed by Saskatchewan farmer Gerald Stanley. Alleging police misconduct in the shooting investigation, the Boushie family filed a complaint with the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission for the RCMP (CRCC).

In March 2018, the CRCC began its review of the RCMP’s conduct. The commission submitted its findings and recommendations to the RCMP at the end of 2019. It took the RCMP a whole year to respond. As a result, the final report was not released until March 2021.
