Hamilton Health Sciences pays tribute to the Honourable Murray Sinclair
November 5, 2024
We are deeply saddened by the passing of the Honourable Murray Sinclair, a visionary leader whose influence has profoundly shaped how public organizations respond to the legacy of residential schools and their ongoing impact on the health and well-being of Indigenous peoples. His work has left a lasting impact on our collective journey toward healing and reconciliation.
As Chief Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Senator Sinclair’s dedication to truth, justice, and reconciliation has guided institutions like HHS in acknowledging and understanding the legacy of colonialism, the importance of genuine relationship building and addressing institutional and systemic anti-indigenous racism. The Commission’s Calls to Action, inspired by his steady leadership, have been a catalyst for transformation across Canada, and have helped shape HHS’s own efforts to better serve Indigenous communities, particularly as we care for Canada’s largest on-reserve Indigenous population.
While we know there is still much work ahead, we take inspiration from Senator Sinclair’s legacy. His example continues to guide and inspire us as we strive to build lasting, positive relationships to create change in the health and well-being of Indigenous peoples. His commitment to justice and healing will remain a beacon in our ongoing efforts.
