Inuit-Specific Child Welfare Data Discussion Paper

by ahnationtalk on November 7, 202437 Views

An Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit and Metis children, youth and families has created national standards, the commitment to resources and the ability to exercise jurisdiction over child and family services by Inuit Treaty Organizations. It has the potential to change outcomes for Inuit children and families across the country.

What is still required is improved collection, sharing, and reporting of Inuit-specific data. This will help nurture a better understanding of the current circumstances of Inuit in contact with the child welfare system, while providing evidence to inform policies and practices.

This Data Discussion Paper was developed by the Inuit Crown Partnership Committee’s Inuit Data Strategy Working Group, comprised of Inuit organizations and federal, provincial and territorial partners. This paper is designed to support an Inuit-driven approach to child and family service delivery. Increasing and creating data collection for Inuit Treaty Organizations will provide evidence and resources to support Inuit child welfare sovereignty.
