The KAIROS Canada community and network in Canada and around the world extends deep condolences, sympathy, and support to all those who have lost loved ones and been impacted by the grievous attacks in James Smith Cree Nation and in the town of Weldon, Saskatchewan.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those who are grieving lost family members and friends and suffering unimaginable pain. We pray for a swift and complete recovery for those who are injured and wish strength for all those dealing with these horrific acts of violence.

KAIROS stands in solidarity with the people of James Smith Cree Nation during this profoundly difficult time. We are encouraged that the federal ministers of Public Safety, Crown-Indigenous Relations, and Indigenous Services, as well as the Prime Minister, have expressed their commitment to provide full support to the tri-communities of James Smith Cree Nation, Chakastaypasin Band, and Peter Chapman Band.

The call for governments at all levels to work collaboratively with Indigenous community leaders and members remains paramount. Indigenous peoples know how to build, secure and strengthen their communities and it is imperative that governments start listening, acting and strongly supporting them. This will be a step towards healing and the prevention of future tragedies.

People experiencing pain or distress because of the information in this statement can access counsellors at the Hope for Wellness Helpline – 1.855.242.3310 – or via online chat at www.hopeforwellness.ca. This 24/7 service is available to all Indigenous peoples across Canada in English and French and upon request in Cree, Ojibway, and Inuktitut.
