Métis Nation Virtual Engagement: UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

by ahnationtalk on October 23, 202026 Views

The Métis National Council (MNC) is pleased to invite you to participate in its upcoming virtual engagement sessions on proposed federal legislation to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

The MNC has been working in collaboration with the Government of Canada, the Assembly of First Nations and the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami to develop this legislation, with the goal of having it introduced in Parliament by the end of this year.

The UN Declaration is an important instrument of international law, and it holds a great deal of promise for the Métis Nation. It presents a strong picture of the human rights of Indigenous Peoples, built on a foundation of meaningful self-determination. It is therefore crucial that the Métis Nation has a strong voice in how the UN Declaration is implemented.

The purpose of this virtual engagement session is to enhance awareness of this legislation within the Métis Nation as well as to seek feedback on the rights, needs and perspectives of Métis Nation citizens.

The engagement sessions will provide an overview of the UN Declaration itself, as well as examining the legislative effort to implement the UN Declaration domestically and what this could mean for the future of Métis Nation citizens, governments, and Canada as a whole. We are seeking feedback from participants that will be put towards further shaping the implementation process.

The virtual engagement sessions are scheduled for November 2, 2020 and November 4, 2020, from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm Eastern Time.

Each session is identical in terms of agenda and content. Please choose which session you would like to attend and register here:
