November 8, 2016 (Ottawa, ON) – Métis National Council welcomes the commitments made by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) announced by President Alain Beaudet on November 4, 2016. We acknowledge the significant role of the national Aboriginal Health Research Steering Committee comprised of veteran Indigenous health researchers and representatives from Assembly of First Nations, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami and Métis National Council in its collaboration with CIHR over the past two years leading to these commitments. It is this joint effort that has resulted in such an achievement we can proudly share with CIHR and Health Canada.

An increase to a minimum of 4.6% investment in Indigenous health research and stronger Indigenous voices at all governance levels of CIHR and on peer review committees will support our intentions to be directly engaged in research decisions impacting Indigenous health research. It is through successful implementation of the commitments made by the CIHR that we will have confirmation of our ongoing strong relationship with CIHR.

“As the Métis Nation continues to pursue Métis health and wellness aspirations we can now say with confidence that the essential Indigenous health research to produce strong evidence of need; inform planning and interventions; and evaluate progress intended to improve health outcomes is achievable”, said MNC Health Minister Clara Morin Dal Col.
