The Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation has released a statement following the federal election.
They congratulated Justin Trudeau on winning the election, but said they’re cautious because of his previous performance.
“We are looking forward to continuing our work with the Liberal government,” said Chief Kelly LaRocca. “Although not as central to his party’s campaign as we would have hoped, Justin Trudeau and his party have once again created an ambitious agenda of Indigenous issues to tackle over the next few years. We hope that these items get ticked off his to-do list this time around.”
The statement says the first nation appreciates Trudeau’s previous symbolic gestures during his tenure, but there are still a number of challenges facing Canada’s Indigenous population that need to be addressed.
