New safe space planned for Curve Lake First Nation – Peterborough Examiner

Women and children at risk would be able to stay at Westview House.

Curve Lake First Nation hopes to start bringing at-risk women and children into Westview House, a new safe home that embodies a culturally-informed, community-based holistic approach, by late next year.

“We know there is a genuine need among our members to deliver hope, healing and wellness,” states a release from Curve Lake First Nation. “The community came to use with an idea (and) the administration worked on reviewing costs and opportunities, and we are now pleased to announced chief and council supported the purchase of the property located on Westview Road.”

In an email to The Examiner, Robin Steed, manager of health and family Services at Curve Lake First Nation, said the Westview House will act as “a roof for homeless women, a roof for those leaving domestic abuse, a home for women who may be facing imminent homelessness, a home where perhaps a family is struggling and a mom needs added support to ensure the security, safety and well-being of their children as a prevention intervention.”
