October 9, 2018 – Mississauga, Ontario – The Aboriginal Sport and Wellness Council of Ontario (ASWCO) announced Tuesday official notice of its 2018 Annual General Meeting, which is scheduled for Sunday, November 18, 2018 at 9:30 am in Thunder Bay, Ontario at the Valhalla Inn Hotel.

Call for Nominations – ASWCO Board of Directors

ASWCO is the recognized Provincial/Territorial Aboriginal Sport Body for Ontario, serving all Indigenous Peoples and communities across the province of Ontario, including First Nations, Inuit and Metis, living on and off-reserve, in rural and urban settings. ASWCO develops opportunities for participation in sport and cultural activities that promote wellness and positive lifestyles for Indigenous peoples across Ontario. ASWCO is seeking individuals interested in serving on the Board of Directors. Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply by submitting an online nomination on, or before Friday, November 9, 2018 at 6pm (Eastern). A board-approved Nominations Committee will review all nominations and recommend a slate of the candidates to the 2018 Annual General Meeting scheduled for November 18 in Thunder Bay.

The ASWCO Nomination Committee is in the process of nominating up to a maximum of six (6) board members for a three-year term. The Committee seeks inclusive pools of candidates to ensure diversity among member applications, including gender, First Nations, Inuit, Metis, geographical representation, and skill set, while sharing the values of ASWCO.

The Nominations Committee will recommend a final slate of candidates to the Board. The Nominations Chair will review the process and nominees and ask for approval to proceed to the 2018 Annual General Meeting. All applicants will be notified of their status prior to the Annual General Meeting.

General Role of a Board of Directors

The Board consists of Officers (Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, Secretary), and up to a maximum of eight (8) other members and the CEO. The Officers constitute the Executive Committee. The term of Board Members is three (3) years. The Board is the governing body of the Association. The Board deliberates and acts only by consensus during a properly called and noticed meeting with a quorum present.

Responsibilities of Directors

An ASWCO board member is responsible to represent the Mission, Vision and Values of the organization. The role requires the Board Member to be accountable for the following duties:

1. Meeting Participation – The Board Member is expected to participate in all meetings of the Board including conference calls and face-to-face meetings.
2. Committee Participation – The Board Member is also expected to actively participate or Chair one or more ASWCO Committees, as amended from time to time.
3. Be Informed – The Board Member must be informed about the affairs of the Council to properly perform their duty to act in the best interest in the association. The expectation is the Board Member prepares for each Board conference call or meeting by reviewing all material provided with the meeting agenda. The Board Member is also expected to listen to, empathize with and share the needs of the membership.
4. Conflict of Interest and Confidentiality – The Board Member shall not participate in any Council decision when the Board Member has a material financial, political or personally advancing interest in the transaction in question without first informing the Board of the interest and following proper procedures.

• The Aboriginal Sport and Wellness Council of Ontario (ASWCO) is the official Provincial/Territorial Aboriginal Sporting Body (P/TASB) for Ontario and serves all Indigenous Peoples and communities, including First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples, living both on and off reserve, in urban and rural settings, across Ontario.

• Net proceeds from Toronto 2017 NAIG were directed to a Legacy Fund, aimed at increasing sport and wellness programming, services, and equipment to Indigenous youth and communities, across the province of Ontario.
• ASWCO operates more than forty events on an annual basis, including multi-sport and leadership camps, the Ontario Native Basketball Invitational, the Ontario Native Volleyball Invitational, sport clinics, try-outs for Aboriginal Team Ontario, conferences, workshops and retreats.
• ASWCO’s Standing Bear Youth Leadership program, developed in consultation with more than 550 youth across Ontario, is available for all Indigenous youth in Ontario, with a number of camps, conferences and workshops held throughout the year.
• ASWCO is recognized by both the Aboriginal Sport Circle (ASC) and the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) Council, as the designated sport body for Ontario in regards to selecting and managing teams for the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships (NAHC) and the NAIG.
• ASWCO is funded primarily by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport and the Government of Ontario.
