The Canadian corrections system fails to meet the needs of Indigenous people behind bars. Racism, survival and culture collide when your skin is brown and barred. What causes the disparaging systematic inequities?

More than 30 per cent of inmates in Canadian prisons are Indigenous. We make up five per cent of Canada’s population; since 2010, the number of Indigenous people in prisons has grown by nearly 44 per cent, while Indigenous women represent 42 per cent of the female prison population. With the highest suicide rates in all of Canada, Inuit communities are crying in desperation for physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health supports.
