(M’Chigeeng First Nation, ON – September 22, 2021) Ontario Regional Chief Glen Hare issued the following statement congratulating re-elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the new and returning Members of Parliament in the 44th General Election:

“I would like to congratulate Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on his re-election and the new and returning Members of Parliament, as well as the 10 Indigenous candidates who were elected in the 44th Federal Election,” said Ontario Regional Chief Glen Hare.

“I hope this election presents a renewed focus on Indigenous issues. While I am pleased to continue our important work alongside Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Cabinet, I must remind the Prime Minister that many promises have not been kept, and the government’s approach to addressing Indigenous issues cannot continue to be politicized.

We require the Government of Canada to work with us to develop an action plan that addresses the critical issues affecting First Nations in Ontario. This plan must be based on a renewed relationship and full commitment to moving our shared priorities to the forefront.

Of particular importance is accelerating the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action 71-76 and ensuring a First Nations-led process to address the undocumented graves and burial sites in Ontario. Bringing clean drinking water to all First Nations communities in Ontario, addressing climate change, and equitable post-pandemic recovery are all top priorities we need to begin work on immediately.

I look forward to meeting with Prime Minister Trudeau, his Cabinet, and other elected Members of Parliament as soon as possible to implement the priorities of First Nations in Ontario.”
