First, let’s remember that we are not talking about ancient history here. The federal government was responsible for inflicting terrible hardships on the First Nations during the lifetime of most of us.

During the week of July 24, 2022 Pope Francis travelled across Canada to apologize and express sorrow for the Roman Catholic residential schools and their horrific, genocidal impact on First Nations peoples. The apology was a very important step toward reconciliation.

But it isn’t simply the church that needs to engage in apologies to the First Nations. It is also the federal government that has a great deal to atone for.
