Popular Indigenous cafe closing in Kensington Market — but there’s still ways to taste its food – The Toronto Star

Since 2016, Shawn Adler and his team have served Indigenous brunch and cuisine in the heart of Kensington Market.

On a recent dreary Saturday morning the downpour did not stop the two dozen or so people lined up outside Pow Wow Cafe for an Indigenous-style brunch.

Those who showed up early enough were lucky to get a seat. Others were put on a wait list and told to expect a call in an hour. All were greeted with the aromatic smells of freshly made frybread. These diners wanted one more chance to eat here before the Kensington Market location closed.

Customers were chatting with one another and pointing to the menu items written on the blackboards in chalk on the walls. Some were admiring the Pow Wow Cafe shirts, along with Indigenous-made products like beadwork earrings hanging on the walls, available for purchase behind the tables.

All the while, owner Shawn Adler and his team — including his daughter — were focused on prepping fresh fruit, greens and meat. He has been serving Indigenous cuisine at 213 Augusta Ave. since 2016; however, with the lease ending at the end of May, Pow Wow Cafe closes on Sunday.
