Powassan acknowledging it is on traditional Indigenous lands in public meetings – North Bay Nipissing News

Mayor hopes to see other committees and organizations follow suit

The Municipality of Powassan has joined an increasing number of municipalities and organizations that have added a historic acknowledgement to the start of public meetings.

Mayor Peter McIsaac brought the concept forward during a meeting held on the eve of Canada’s first Truth and Reconciliation Day, and the practice was introduced during the Oct. 5 regular council meeting.

“I think we should be doing an acknowledgment before our meetings in light of Truth and Reconciliation,” said McIsaac. “Before every council meeting for sure, and we should consider making the suggestion that other boards and committees do the same.”
