Yesterday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil to discuss the commercial lobster fishery.
The Prime Minister and the Premier condemned the appalling violence that has taken place, and discussed work underway by federal and provincial ministers to maintain the peace and avoid any further violence.
They agreed on the need for all parties to engage in respectful dialogue aimed at upholding the Marshall Decision and the Mi’kmaq treaty right to fish while ensuring the conservation and sustainability of the fishery.
They welcomed cooperation between Minister Blair and Minister Furey to increase RCMP police presence in the area to protect the safety of all citizens.
Both leaders agreed to stay in close contact and to encourage dialogue and mediation in pursuit of a solution.
