The Métis Nation of Ontario Advocacy Program invites you to a Public Legal Education session, “Office of the Children’s Lawyer: What You Need to Know About the OCL and Children’s Rights.” This virtual community event, aimed at promoting legal literacy in Métis communities, will take place via Zoom on November 20, 2024, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

What is the session about?

This session provides an overview of the role of the Office of the Children’s Lawyer and children’s rights, with a special focus on the obligations of child protection agencies when working with First Nations, Inuit, or Métis children.

The discussion will cover the federal Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit, Métis Children, Youth, and Families and Ontario’s Child, Youth and the Family Services Act (CYFSA). We will also discuss children’s rights under the Children’s Law Reform Act (CLRA), particularly when the OCL is involved in matters of decision-making.

About Our Guest Speaker

We are excited to welcome Maureen Bulbrook as our guest speaker. Maureen is Haudenosaunee Ago from Six Nations of the Grand River, and an advocate for children’s rights with extensive experience in child welfare law. As Indigenous Counsel for the Office of the Children’s Lawyer, she works to bring Indigenous perspectives into the legal process, decolonizing mindsets and raising awareness of the realities faced by Indigenous children.
