Racism not unique to city – The Chronicle Journal

Thunder Bay’s racism problem isn’t exclusive.

That’s according to Becky Sasakamoose Kuffner, a cultural diversity and race relations consultant with the City of Saskatoon. Kuffner was a promising practices speaker at an event held by the city’s anti-racism advisory committee, which was at the Italian Cultural Centre on Tuesday.

Around 144 participants attended the conference in order to come up with recommendations to help the city move forward on the issue of racism.

Kuffner, who shared some of the steps Saskatoon has taken to combat racism, said when she participated in a nationwide research project spearheaded by Thunder Bay three years ago, they started shifting the focus from solely doing diversity and multi-cultural education to including anti-racism.

She said cities across the country face similar problems because of assimilation and policies that have been enacted in Canada.
