Report unearths potential environmental impacts of proposed Eastern Ontario prison – Inside Ottawa Valley

The province is urged to abandon its Kemptville prison plan.
A University of Ottawa research team flagged several harmful environmental impacts related to clearing the farm side of the former Kemptville Campus to make way for a 235-bed prison. The report urged the province to ditch its plans for the Eastern Ontario Correctional Complex.

- As part of a modernization strategy for the eastern region, the Ontario government announced the construction of what was first dubbed the Greater Ottawa Correctional Complex in August 2020 to alleviate overcrowding in the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre. According to Infrastructure Ontario, the prison will “improve access to programming, living conditions and education, while also updating automation and technology.”
