8 Anishnaabeg First Nations take on a project that will change eating habits and social services in their communities

On a chilly fall morning, the eight Anishnaabeg First Nations on the north shore of Lake Huron achieved a long-held dream: to acquire greenhouses that will change social services and eating habits in their communities.

The organization leading the project, Niigaaniin (meaning “moving forward” in Ojibwe), wants to plant seedlings by next spring.

In a forest of pine trees, Darrell Jacques, the director of Niigaaniin services in Mississauga First Nation, looks calmly at the metallic structures that surround him. The joy and pride is evident on his face. He knows these greenhouses will do much more than provide food for the eight communities.
