Six Nations of the Grand River Mourns the Loss of Chief Arnold Gardner

Six Nations of the Grand River (SNGR) would like to extend its heartfelt sympathy to the family of the late Ogiichidaa Chief Arnold Gardner, and the Migisi Sahgaigan (Eagle Lake First Nation) community.

Chief Gardner made his journey to the spirit world on May 31, 2023 at the age of 72.

The Chief was renowned throughout Treaty Three, Canada, and the United States. He was a man of the culture and was passionate about preserving the Anishnaabe way of life. Ogiichidaa was a leader, mentor, role model and friend that lived by the grandfather teachings.

Chief Gardner was known for many things, including bringing awareness to mental health and addictions, as well as his vision to help support that in his community with a treatment centre. He will be remembered for his strong position on education, treaty rights, land preservation, children, and neighbourhood.

“Chief Gardner was truly a great man and we stand alongside his family and community as they celebrate his life and mourn his passing.” Chief Mark B. Hill said, “He led by example through his bravery, honesty, humility and truth. His legacy will live on through the generations.”
