Statement on the Passing of Justice Murray Sinclair

by ahnationtalk on November 5, 202421 Views

On behalf HWDSB, we express profound sadness following the death of Senator Murray Sinclair.

Senator Sinclair, whose spirit name is Mizhana Gheezhik (The One Who Speaks of Pictures in the Sky), died early yesterday morning in hospital surrounded by family. A sacred fire will be lit in his honour on the grounds of the Manitoba legislature.  Out of respect for his journey for the next few days, the family respectfully asks others across the country to please DO NOT light any other fires for him.

“The impact of our dad’s work reached far across the country and the world,” Sinclair’s family said in a statement. “From residential school survivors to law students, to those who sat across from him in a courtroom, he was always known as an exceptional listener who treated everyone with dignity and respect. We know that stories of his kindness, generosity and fairness will circulate for generations to come.”

Senator Sinclair was a pivotal figure in Canadian history, known for his profound contributions to justice, education, and reconciliation. Born in 1951, he became the first Indigenous judge in Manitoba and later served as the Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), where he played a crucial role in addressing the legacy of residential schools in Canada. His work brought to light the traumatic experiences of Indigenous peoples and emphasized the importance of education in fostering understanding and healing.

Sinclair’s legacy in education is particularly significant. He advocated for curriculum reforms that include Indigenous perspectives and histories, aiming to create a more inclusive educational environment. His belief that education is a powerful tool for reconciliation has inspired many to pursue a deeper understanding of systemic racial injustice and to promote respect and collaboration among Indigenous Peoples and all Canadians. Through his leadership, he has left an indelible mark on the path toward a more equitable society, encouraging future generations to learn from the past and

work towards a better future.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Senator Sinclair’s family during this difficult time. His contributions to Canada and the fight for justice will be remembered and cherished, and his spirit will continue to guide us in our efforts toward intergenerational healing and reconciliation.

The Honourable Justice Murray Sinclair pointed to education as the key to reconciliation, stating, “Education got us into this mess and education will get us out of it.”
