TORONTO — Today, Greg Rickford, Minister of Indigenous Affairs, issued the following statement on Louis Riel Day:

“Every November 16, Ontarians join the Métis people in commemorating Louis Riel Day and acknowledging his important historical legacy as a political leader, activist and champion of justice.

It is a day to honour Riel’s contributions to Canadian Confederation and to protecting the diverse history, culture and identity of the Métis people. His courageous defense of minority and language rights helped lay the groundwork for a more inclusive Ontario and Canada.

The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) is raising the Métis flag to honour Louis Riel at the 26th Annual MNO Louis Riel Day Commemorative Ceremony at Queen’s Park today at 12:15 p.m. The ceremony will take place at the flag pole outside the Ontario Legislature Building and will be broadcast live on MNO’s Facebook page.

I encourage all Ontarians to take the opportunity to learn more about Louis Riel’s place in history as a civil rights leader and the many historic and present-day contributions of Métis people to our province.”
