Payroll employment, earnings and hours, January 2018

Average weekly earnings of non-farm payroll employees were $996 in January, little changed from the previous month. Earnings were up 3.2% compared with January 2017, largely the result of gains in the second half of 2017.

National tourism indicators, fourth quarter 2017

Tourism spending in Canada was unchanged in the fourth quarter, following 1.3% growth in each of the previous two quarters. Increased spending by international visitors to Canada was offset by a decline in tourism spending by Canadians at home.

Police resources in Canada, 2017

The number of police officers per 100,000 people in Canada fell for a sixth consecutive year in 2017, reaching its lowest rate since 2004. The rate of police officer strength stood at 188 officers per 100,000 population in 2017, down 1.0% from the previous year and lower than the peak strength of 206 officers in 1975. Meanwhile, police services are increasingly made up of civilian members such as clerks, communications staff and managers and professionals.

Aircraft movement statistics: Major airports, January 2018

There were 356,096 aircraft take-offs and landings at the 91 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in January, compared with 368,525 movements in January 2017.

The six Canadian Level I air carriers flew 6.6 million passengers on scheduled and charter services in January, up 5.6% from January 2017 and continuing the upward year-over-year monthly trend that began in April 2014.

Railway carloadings, January 2018

The volume of rail freight carried in Canada totalled 30.1 million tonnes in January, up 3.0% from January 2017. The gain was largely attributable to a 25.5% increase in traffic received from United States connections.

Ecosystem accounting: Thematic accounts: Land cover and land use for selected geographic areas, 1991 to 2011

The Wood Buffalo census agglomeration (CA) in Alberta, which includes the town of Fort McMurray, had the highest rate of built-up area growth from 1991 to 2011 (347%). Vernon, British Columbia (37%) and Drummondville, Quebec (33%) had the next highest rates of growth among a group of 10 CAs with land cover and land use data that are now available.

Pilot Survey—Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth, 2016

Data from the pilot survey of the Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth are now available for research. The data were collected between October and December 2016 to test survey content, methodology, collection and processing, prior to the implementation of a full survey in 2019. The data represent 1,528 children and youth aged 1 to 17 living in the provinces and territories who responded to the pilot. The dataset will be available at Statistics Canada’s Research Data Centres.
