It is the mission of Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI) to broadly provide Inuit-specific programs that contribute to the health and wellbeing of Inuit and to encourage and support similar programs for Inuit across the country. With over 30 years of highly successful experience in crafting the design, development, and delivery of a wide range of effective, client-centered services, TI continues to deliver quality programs and services that directly benefit our growing urban Inuit population.

The Mamisarvik Healing Centre Program delivers Inuit-specific treatment for trauma and substance use disorders. Professional, confidential, non-judgmental recovery and healing services are provided to Inuit 18 years of age or older. Mamisarvik also provides day and residential treatment programming.

The Community Support Worker provides residential support and program services to clients at the Mamisarvik Healing Centre (MHC). A non-counselling role, the Community Support Worker interacts with the MHC team in providing needed information or to communicate interactions and other situations that may become known to them through the course of their work and program activities.

Job Responsibilities include:

  • Provide supervision and emo�onal support to residen�al clients
  • Facilitate co-opera�ve living and conflict resolu�on amongst residents
  • Support residents to follow house rules and policies
  • Deliver recrea�onal programming
  • Prepare group recrea�onal plans either independently or through a mul�disciplinary team approach and in conjunc�on with clients and staff
  • Teach life skills e.g., cleaning, cooking, personal hygiene etc. as required
  • Perform and/or supervise housekeeping du�es and meal prepara�on
  • Perform building security du�es and spot checks as required
  • Complete shi� rou�nes as directed by opera�onal procedures
  • Maintain shi� briefing form
  • Transports clients to/from appointments in a safe, �mesaving, logis�cally sound and efficient fashion
  • Works collabora�vely with the Food Service Coordinator to ensure the nutri�onal needs of the clients are met
  • Document client notes, incident reports, etc. as needed
  • Work with the clinical team at Mamisarvik to provide regular updates on client’s needs and challenges
  • Atend and par�cipate in regular team mee�ngs and debrief sessions as scheduled
  • Ability to work offsite during the on-the-land component of the program (overnight stays may be required)

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of Inuit culture, values, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and tradi�onal prac�ces. Will have knowledge of issues related to addic�ons, trauma, residen�al schools and forced reloca�on.

Excellent organiza�onal skills and ability to plan and schedule client’s external appointments, excellent decision-making skills, strong teamwork skills, adept with MS-Office and internet are necessary.

The ability to intervene as required to de-escalate conflicts and crises by helping to resolve disputes; communicate effec�vely with clients in some�mes difficult situa�ons; and to respond to emergency and crisis situa�ons are all requirements of the posi�on.

Social Service Worker or Personal Support Worker diploma/degree OR significant related work experience is required. Experience working in a trauma and addic�ons treatment se�ng is required. First Aid, CPR, ASIST, Non-Violent Crisis Interven�on training, Safe Food Handling Course and other training as iden�fied are necessary. Fluency in English is required, fluency in Inuk�tut is a definite asset.

A combina�on of related educa�on and experience may be accepted.
