The Board of the Canadian Museums Association today announced the resignation of its Executive Director and CEO, Janis Kahentóktha Bomberry.

“The Canadian Museums Association Board of Directors extends our heartfelt gratitude to Janis Kahentóktha Bomberry for her outstanding leadership and lasting contributions as Executive Director and CEO.”

Ms. Bomberry resigned due to personal health considerations. This was a difficult decision made in consultation with her medical advisors and with deep reflection on her well-being. She will continue to serve in her role until January 16, 2026, to support a thoughtful and stable transition for the CMA.

During her nearly three years of leadership, Ms. Bomberry has guided the CMA through a period of significant transformation and renewal. Her tenure has marked meaningful advancements in the Association’s financial resiliency during a complex post-pandemic landscape, and she has been a driving force in advancing the CMA’s commitments to reconciliation and the decolonization of museum practice. Under her leadership, the Association also embarked on a comprehensive strategic planning process, set to culminate in the release of a new Strategic Plan in 2026, one shaped by broad sector consultation and a vision for a more equitable, engaged, and sustainable future.

“Janis’s commitment to renewal, sustainability, and meaningful member engagement has positioned the CMA for a bright and inclusive future. The museum sector needs more leaders like her, leaders who listen deeply, act boldly, and light the way forward with integrity and heart.”

The Board is working closely with Ms. Bomberry to develop a robust interim plan and will provide more information around the hiring process in the coming months. Following the model as set out by the last Executive hiring process, the board intends to convene a diverse search and selection committee made of representatives from across our membership.

The CMA wishes Janis all the best in her future endeavours, and is deeply appreciative of the work that she has done for the organization.
