Food Support Worker
Oshkiigmong Gitigan / Community Farmers Market

The purpose of this position is to coordinate the Curve Lake Community Farmers Market to provide fresh produce to the community, support the Agricultural Programs Coordinator with activities at Oshkiigmong Gitigan (Curve Lake Community Garden), general farm duties and programming. This position will collaborate with the Curve Lake Community Garden partners and stakeholders to grow, harvest and transport fruits and vegetables, and to support the activities at Oshkiigmong Sugar Bush while promote community food sovereignty and food security.

The duties and responsibilities of this position include:

  • Operate the weekly community market
  • Engage with community members, offer serving/cooking suggestions for potentially unfamiliar foods
  • Distribute samples of new items and provide information
  • Collect feedback from community members about produce
  • Sort and pack fruit and vegetables at the garden site, community market, and Food Bank.
  • Load, unload and transfer crates, supplies, farm produce and products for transport.
  • Working with student employees from Trent University and Curve Lake First Nation
  • Operate farm machinery and equipment.
  • Follow food safety and security procedures.
  • Detect disease and health problems in crops.
  • Clean up racks, trays, and harvest bins and general clean-up of growing, producing and packing areas.
  • Participates in greenhouse cultivation and transplanting operations.
  • General inventory of equipment and tools.
  • Assist in preparing garden beds for planting.
  • Support activities at the sugar bush, including tapping trees, operating boiler system, collecting firewood, and canning syrup.
  • Assists with other duties as required, from time to time, aiding with the efficient operation of the department and organization.

QUALIFICATIONS: Basic Requirements: (APPLICANTS MUST SHOW NECESSARY PROOF WITH APPLICATION OR WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY SCREENED OUT)

EDUCATION:

  • A high school diploma or GED is required

OTHER RELATED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid drivers license, driver abstract will be required
  • Applicant must be at least 25 years old, due to insurance requirements of fleet vehicles Experience as a Gardener is an asset
  • Experience working with money is an asset
  • Knowledge working with spreadsheets and keeping records
  • Knowledge of sugarbush operations would be an asset
  • Willingness to learn, be creative and flexible when situations change, adaptable to new technologies.
  • Ability to work in ambiguous environments.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a Part-time contract position beginning immediately until March 31, 2026. This position is a minimum of 20 hours/week and up to a maximum of 39.5 hours/week with an hourly rate of $22.40/hour. May be required to work early mornings, evenings and/or weekends.
