OTTAWA – A lawyer for the family of an Indigenous man killed on a Saskatchewan farm says an independent review of how R-C-M-P handled the case could lead to positive change.

The Civilian Review and Complaints Commission will review how Mounties handled the shooting death of 22-year-old Colten Boushie, who died in 2016 on a farm near Biggar.

Last month, a jury acquitted Gerald Stanley of second-degree murder in Boushie’s death — a verdict that led to protests across the country.

The review is to determine whether the R-C-M-P conducted a reasonable investigation, whether the officers’ actions followed procedure and whether there was any discrimination based on race.

Chris Murphy, a lawyer for the Boushie family, says the findings could lead to crucial changes in the R-C-M-P.

The commission says it will make the final report public once it is completed.
